FAQs

How big is a drop of oil?

This is one we get all the time.

In the days of sight-feed lubricator pumps, delivery rates were expressed in "drops/minute." But there were two types of pumps, vacuum and liquid filled, and drops in one were three times the size of the other!

So, here are the conversion values, assuming 30 or 40 weight oil at room temperature.

For vacuum sight glasses For liquid filled
1 drop = .002 cu.in. 1 drop = .006 cu.in.
14,115 drops = 1 Pint 4,705 drops = 1 Pint
10 drops/minute = 1 Pint/24 Hours 10 drops/minute = 3 Pints/24 Hours

Keep in mind that the above are estimates since, due to surface tension, a drop of kerosene isn't as big as a drop of gear oil, and a drop of 30 weight oil at 0 degrees is larger than one at 150 degrees.

When you think about it, that's a good reason to have a positive delivery lubrication system like our Watchman Lubrication System rather than multiple pump lubricators. And you get protected delivery as a bonus!

By the way, if you still have the older style liquid filled glasses, get rid of them! They can become pressurized and explode if air is present in the glass or the lube line. Replace them with vacuum glass type pumps which present no safety risks.

I need to get three drops/minute to my air compressor, but when I turn down the lubricator pump it quits pumping. What do I do?

A common issue today with pump-to-point lubricators is that they are designed to pump more oil than is really required. The OEM lubricator is often the original or exact duplicate of the one designed in 1832 when lubricating oil wasn't as efficient as oils are today. So, it is running too fast and the pump pistons have too large a displacement.

There are a few possible solutions. First, you may be able to change the gear ratio in the lubricator box, or find smaller displacement pumps. But remember, a multi-pump lubricator still cannot provide protected lubrication delivery.

Another option is to ask us to design a simple divider block system with a monitor. We'll be pleased to do so. Even better, let us quote a custom Watchman Lubrication System – it's the best way to go!

I have a compressor down due to a lubricator failure. It has to get up and running ASAP. How fast can I get a Watchman Lubrication System delivered?

At Sloan Brothers, we have been known to take a call in the morning, design the appropriate system right away, build it in the afternoon, ship it that evening, and have our technician on site to install it the next day. You can't find that kind of service anywhere else!

Can I talk to someone in my industry who has experience using Watchman Lubrication Systems?

Of course! Check out our Case Studies on this website, then give us a call. Chances are there are Watchman Lubrication Systems in operation near you. We'll give you a contact name and number so you can get a firsthand report on how well our lubrication systems work.

In some cases, a longtime Watchman Lubrication System user may say something like, "I don't know much about it I bought it 15 years ago and it just sits there and runs." But that's a pretty good report in itself!

All I really need is a new lubricator for my air compressor. Do you stock standard units?

Absolutely. We stock standard lubricators for air compressors and can ship the same day you call. Sloan Brothers' standard bolt OEM replacements are in stock and ready to go. If you have an obsolete model or design, we can suggest an alternative or an electric motor-driven unit to do the job.

There is never a reason for you to accept long delivery times from other companies. Sloan Brothers has what you need, when you need it.
